Free, fun, educational and something for the whole family – believe it or not, this place does exist!
Osprey House Environmental Centre (
Dohles Rocks Road, Griffin) is a volunteer run wildlife refuge that provides animal encounters and learning opportunities for the public. The house and grounds are owned by
Moreton Bay Regional Council.
Osprey House contains a range of displays informing visitors about the koalas, snakes, birds and other species of animal that frequents the area, and an in-house theatre offering wildlife shows and documentaries on request. The children's corner offers a 'Touch and Feel Table' and colour-in sheets and environmental quizzes.
Outside, visitors can explore the mangroves by taking a stroll along the boardwalk; visit the raptor 'Nesting Platform,' where one chick has already been successfully raised; borrow binoculars for a spot of bird watching and explore the
Yali Moyum trail, which explains six areas of native significance throughout the grounds. Volunteers can provide more information about bush tucker plants, sustainability and the history of the site (which was once a rubbish dump).
For meal times there is an undercover picnic and barbeque area with electric barbeque, seats and tables.
Osprey House is open Monday to Sunday from 10.00am until 4.00pm, although the grounds (including the boardwalk and barbeque and picnic facilities) are available at any time.
