Can you call a Portuguese chicken burger a 'Bondi' and get away with it? That's what Oporto has done but I ask what is so 'Bondi' about it? Is it just a shameless marketing exercise? The Oporto franchise did start up at Bondi so I guess it is an acknowledgment to the people of Bondi who supported this branch which became the launch pad for the Oporto juggernaut.

But let's dissect the burger and see if there is a more organic connection. Firstly at $4.98 for a single fillet burger ($6.98 for a double) it's not outrageously expensive. Looking at my burger, it doesn't look overly attractive nor is it as thick and lettuce filled as the Oporto photo. The large sesame seed bun is a little brittle. I feel that if I press too hard it's going to break up. If there was cheese, it must have melted as I couldn't find it. The seasoned chicken fillets are delightfully moist but it's the chilli infused mayonnaise that is the real secret to its winning flavour.

Disappointingly, the only other ingredient is some shreds of iceberg lettuce leaves but, hang on, there you have it. This is the Bondi association. Iceberg. Bondi Icebergs.

So fair enough, go for it Oporto, a Portuguese chicken burger with 'Bondi' Iceberg lettuce. Improve the bun and be more generous with the lettuce and it will be fantastico.
