The St George OpenAir Cinema will once again convert Mrs Macquaries Point into Sydney's largest outdoor cinema this January. With the Opera House, Harbour Bridge and city skyline on duty as the backdrop, the event remains a favourite summer outing, and this year's program doesn't disappoint. Expect a host of film premieres, recent releases and hits from the past year.

The season kicks off on Wednesday the 11th of January with the Australian premiere of My Week with Marilyn, which sees Michelle Williams take on the role of Marilyn Monroe. Already garnering Oscar buzz, this film makes for a blockbuster opening night.

And there's plenty more cinematic excitement where that came from. The Rum Diary is an adaptation of Hunter S Thompson's novel and stars the writer's friend and long-time impersonator, Johnny Depp. J. Edgar features current Sydney resident Leonardo DiCaprio who plays the man responsible for heading the FBI during some of America's most turbulent decades. Moneyball is another recent release and stars Brad Pitt as a manager trying to turn around the fortunes of a struggling baseball team.

A number of other premieres also dot the program. The Artist is set during Hollywood's golden age of silent movies and follows an actor as he uncomfortably tries to move into the brave new world of the talkies. The Adventures of Tintin, directed by Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson, is a 3D animated take on the popular children's tale. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is an adaptation of Stig Larsson's ridiculously successful novel and will sell out as quickly as the organisers can print tickets.

Australian films also get a good look in. Red Dog was hugely successful at the box-office when it was released earlier this year and will be one of the most sought-after nights of the season. Other Australian releases include Any Questions for Ben? the latest offering from the team behind The Castle, and A Few Best Men, from the creators of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert.

The St George OpenAir Cinema has a waterfront restaurant and bar which opens at 6:15pm. This year caterer Belinda Franks will be at the helm, while the Chandon Bar will offer the beer and vino.

Advance ticket sales for the movies start on December 15 at 9am. The event is incredibly popular, so if you've got your heart set on a particular film, don't wait around to snap up a ticket. Despite the event's large capacity, the entire schedule of films often sell-out in the blink of an eye. For a full list of movies and dates, check out the website here.
