Katrina Newman is a gold and silversmith extraordinaire whose studio is in the beautiful Mornington Peninsula. Her workmanship showcases her attention to detail and fine craftsmanship. She'll be having an Open Studio weekend on the weekend of the Queen's Birthday;
10 and 11 June 2017 from 10am to 5pm each day, at
69 Cinerama Crescent, McCrae. Attendance is free, and there'll be light refreshments and an exhibition of her exquisite current work on offer. Plus, one lucky visitor could walk away with the door prize of a pair of her lamp-work glass bead earrings.
This local artist and contemporary jeweller is also the first Australian to be selected to participate in the Canadian Wilderness Artist Residency in the Yukon Territory this July and August. Chosen from 42 applicants to paddle in sub arctic Canada, 735 kms on the Yukon River from Whitehorse to Dawson City, she'll arrive in time to participate in the Riverside Arts Festival and to provide a short training course for young people. An honour indeed.
However, she cannot do this all on her own.
Katrina is running a
fundraising campaign , with the support of the Australian Cultural Fund to assist with the direct costs of the Residency. Your donations, which are tax deductible would be greatly appreciated. Read more about it, and donate
HERE . Every little bit helps to promote our Australian creatives.
Katrina believes, to keep developing and creating great work, one cannot always play it safe. This is a once in a lifetime adventure and experience away from the safety of the studio. Katrina naturally draws on her environment in the creation of her jewellery, and this would be an opportunity to draw on new colours, materials and textures of the changing landscapes in the rugged lands and wilds of northern Canada. Her current pieces showcase how her environment and the changing landscapes of her life impacts on her jewellery.
You might catch a glimpse of the Australian desert in each ring or pendant, the sea and its shores; and from travels that include West African countries Ghana and Mali. This experience will give Katrina the opportunity to expand and challenge her practice. Following the residency, she will develop new work for exhibition in Australia and Canada in 2018/2019. The new work will draw directly on the experience, the culture, new connections and geography of Northern Canada. Your donations in support and development of an Australian creative would be greatly appreciated. Her workmanship stands alone and speaks for itself. Do go and have a chat to Katrina at this Open Studio weekend and meet the woman behind the jewellery and find out more about her upcoming adventure. A drive to the Mornington Peninsula will be like a breath of fresh air.
