As Stephen Sondheim said, "If I cannot fly, let me sing." Yes, singing gives that same uplifting feeling, that same sensation of escape that one gets when flying, so I understand the analogy. Happily, singing is much cheaper and more accessible.

Another quote, this time from Jarod Kintz, "I only sing in the shower. I would join a choir, but I don't think my bathtub can hold that many people."& #8232 ; Well Jarod, and those like you, it's time to take the singing OUT of the bathroom and INTO a choir.

In fact, recent research suggests that singing in a choir is more beneficial to well being than singing alone or playing in a team sport. There are no firm conclusions yet about why this is the case, however, researcher Nick Stewart of Oxford Brooks University theorises:

[ADVERT]"...the experience of using your voice to make music may be enhanced when you feel part of a cohesive social group. Further research could look at how moving and breathing in synchrony with others might be responsible for creating a unique well-being effect."

Hopefully I've convinced you that there's good reason to get out and express your inner Joan Sutherland or Pavarotti. And if I have, here are two choirs you can join. The best part is, you don't even need to audition. You just need to love singing, enjoy laughing and be open to meeting new friends.

The Open Door Singers began as a Gospel Choir. There was such a strong demand for a community choir that in 2013, a new choir was formed for those wishing to branch out beyond gospel music. You can choose to sing in one or both choirs. There is a combined community of nearly 300 people in these choirs.

The Open Door Gospel Singers meet at St Silas Anglican Church, 16 Osburn Avenue, Balwyn North, on Thursdays from 7.30pm - 9.30pm. The Gospel Choir sings gospel music, contemporary Christian and the occasional choral piece. The choir operates on a not for profit basis. Singers from all backgrounds and cultures are welcome.

The Open Door Community Singers meet at the Habitat Uniting Church (St David's) at the corner of Mont Albert and Burke Roads, Canterbury on Mondays from 7.30pm - 9.30pm. The Community Choir sings popular music, contemporary favourites and some well-known classics. Repertoire is drawn from music with a positive message from different sources, including (but not limited to) glee, show tunes, traditional classics, and popular hits from artists as diverse as Adele, Elton John, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Sting, ELO and other leading artists. Traditional international folk music is also incorporated into the repertoire. The aim is to select music that lifts the heart and spirit.

The cost to participate is an annual membership of $75, plus $6 per rehearsal.

If you're interested in joining either of the choirs, please complete the online contact form , and you will be contacted with more information.

Want a Choir to Sing at your Special Event?

Both choirs are also open to invitations to publicly perform. They have performed in churches, at outdoor festivals and at other special events. Please go to the website if you are interested in booking either choir for your event.
