Opals are a beautiful and fascinating gemstone. They are the only gem that can be found in every colour of the spectrum and are, in fact, Australia's national gemstone; we produce about 90% of the world's opals. If you've ever wanted to learn more about these precious stones,
Opals Down Under (
11 Ballantyne Court, Palmview) can answer all your questions.
Opals Down Under is a family run tourist attraction; the Stein family have been mining and cutting the gems since the 60's and has been selling them since 2003. Opals Down Under gives the public a chance to get behind the scenes of the industry.
As well as educational commentary and exhibits, this attraction also provides several interactive activities. The Scratch Patch gem fossicking is popular and gives patrons the chance to be opal miners. Visitors may also watch a professional opal cutter at work (but be sure to
book ahead). And if you're taken by these gems, there's a wide selection of souvenirs, jewellery and gifts to be purchased from the gift store.
Opals Down Under is open from 9.00am until 5.00pm seven days a week, excluding Christmas Day and Good Friday. Admission is free but there are some costs involved with some of the activities.
