[ADVERT]Working from home means I tend to work seven days a week. Since there is always something to be done my computer rarely gets turned off. Even though I love what I do, I find that every so often I need to escape; escape the technology and the daily routine. As I travel with my 12 year old son, I am always on the lookout for family friendly accommodation, where I can relax and where junior can be amused.

A few years ago we ventured out to Nelson Bay for the first time and both fell in love with it. A coastal town with plenty to do, beautiful beaches and relaxed atmosphere, the Port Stephens area has become one of our favourite places to go. The locals are so friendly and welcoming and make you feel part of the community, no matter how short or long you stay.

During our last trip, we stayed at the very family friendly , which is located about eight minutes' drive from the main hub of Nelson Bay. Situated at One Mile Beach, the holiday park has all one may possibly need for a great holiday or weekend getaway.

The park caters to every budget and lifestyle. You can set up your own tent, bring a caravan, rent a cabin or stay at one of the luxury beachside apartments, with all the modern conveniences.

This time we stayed at the beachside apartment which included two bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a fully equipped kitchen with a dishwasher, full sized fridge, microwave, stove, and oven. The living area was spacious and featured a large TV, comfortable sofas as well as a large dining table. Each bedroom had its own TV and one of the bathrooms had a washing machine and dryer built in.

We enjoyed several meals on the front porch, which had its own BBQ and outdoor seating for six people.

If you are after a holiday, where you can relax while the children play all day, then One Mile Beach Holiday park is perfect. With its many facilities including a swimming pool with slides and a spa, basketball court, tennis court, volleyball court, a large playground and put put golf, your children are guaranteed to be busy for hours. No doubt, your kids will make new friends with other children or perhaps with George, a very friendly cockatoo, who lives in the park's aviary. Pay him a little attention, then slowly walk away and you will be amazed at what he does to get you to come back.

Depending on your set-up and whether you feel like cooking, you can either prepare meals in your caravan, cabin or apartment or you can cook a barbecue at the outdoor kitchen. If you are not in the mood to slave over the stove, head over to the The Beach House for breakfast, lunch or dinner.

Alternatively, if a dinner out takes your fancy, then you will find plenty of great restaurants at the nearby Nelson Bay or Shoal Bay.

During the day, you can either relax by the pool or enjoy a few adventures, including:

- a dolphin or whale watch cruise
- hand feed sharks and sting rays at the Australian Shark and Ray Centre
- go sandboarding at the nearby sand dunes
- ride camels at Birubi Beach
- go tobogganing at Toboggan Hill Park
- hire a kayak at Shoal Bay
- go fishing.

Nelson Bay is only 2.5 hours drive from Sydney and 45 minutes drive from Newcastle, making it ideal as a weekend or holiday getaway. Check out which is the perfect family accommodation no matter what your budget is.
