In case you haven't already heard, there's a big event happening in town in 2012. That's right, London will be hosting the Olympic Games, the biggest sporting extravaganza in the world.

As you can well imagine, an event on this scale requires years of planning and organising. Seb Coe, the former middle distance runner, is in charge, and as long as he doesn't leave everything until the back straight, we should be okay. So far so good, it seems.

The great thing about this event is that it's a chance for you to get involved. You may not be the world's fastest sprinter or swimmer but you may have what it takes to be a great volunteer, making a positive contribution and helping to ensure the smooth running of the Games.

The volunteers are being called Games Makers, of which there are two types: generalists and specialists. A whopping 70,000 are required.

A vast range of generalist roles are on offer, including helping out in the Olympic Village, transporting clients and competitors, translating for clients and competitors, welcoming visitors to the venues, liaising with broadcasters and press organisations, catering, managing community relations, promoting sustainability, and helping with government relations. Detailed information can be found here.

Specialist roles will be filled by doctors, nurses, sports specialists and anti-doping officials.

Of course, to be a volunteer, you'll need the right personality. The organisers are keen on getting people who are:
- inspirational
- open/honest
- respectful
- team-focused
- distinctive
- blessed with a 'can do' attitude

Volunteers will receive no pay but will get meal vouchers, free public transport on volunteering days, and a swelling in the bosom area brought on by the pride felt for giving something back to the community and being a part of history.

If you have the skills and the time, and want to get involved, applications for all roles open on 15th September 2010. Training for successful applicants starts in February 2012.
