Since you have already braved the dust and heat of Coober Pedy you must make sure you visit the Old Timers Mine in Coober Pedy. Put your hard hat on and get ready to go underground just like the opal miners did in their day. This historic opal mine, dating back to 1916, includes information galleries, underground display homes, opal jewellery and souvenirs.

A self-guided tour will take you through a series of tunnels including a two bedroom home, whilst telling the story of the tough lives of the miners. Learn about how they tunnelled, who the pioneers were and see a modernised version of how they lived underground. You will even find an antique movie projector, carvings and a number of other historic relics in the museum part of the mine.

A free opal mining machine demonstration is also held three times a day where you can engage in a live demonstration of a "blower" a mining machine used to remove the dust and debris from the mines whilst the miners were digging.

The friendly staff at Coober Pedy will even take care of you pooch for you in their 'Doggie Corner'.

Check it out and be sure to buy yourself an opal while you are there.
