Bavaria comes to Brisbane for two weekends with beer, schweinshaxen, sauerkraut, lebkuchenerzen and the Bavarian Strongman Contest. Yes it's
Oktoberfest time!
On the weekends of 8 – 10 and 15 – 17 October, the RNA Showgrounds will reverberate to the sounds of the Munich Oompah Band, traditional cow bell ringers and yodellers as the most famous German folk festival is celebrated in Brisbane. Contrary to the popular conception that it's all about beer, Oktoberfest has fund for all the family and kids are welcome. Carnival rides and the animal farm will be available on each day of Oktoberfest and Julia's traditional puppet theatre will also entertain the kinders.
Teams in the Bavarian Strongman competition, which will take place on 16 October will undertake gruelling events including keg rolling, saltstick eating and masskrug (beer stein) stemming. The trials to be faced by Miss Oktoberfest contestants (held on 9 October) are top secret but must be completed while wearing traditional German costume.
Both men and women are invited to break out the lederhosen and dirndl while at Oktoberfest and take part in the best traditional dress competition which will be judged on Friday 15 October.
Entry to Oktoberfest starts at $15 and children, accompanied by a responsible adult, can enter for free. The festival is being held at the RNA Showgrounds which is within walking distance of
public transport, specifically the Royal Brisbane Women's Hospital bus station and Bowen Hills and Brunswick Street train stations. Parking is available on site for $10 per day.
