The Sutherland Shire has many beautiful beaches, but I'm sure you already know that. And that's the problem – everyone else does too! But if you're happy to compromise on a little sand, then read on to discover an awesome seaside picnic spot in the Shire where you're guaranteed a good possie.
(Sand is overrated anyway – who likes crunchy sandwiches, or scratchy granules bee lining for bodily crevices? And let's not even talk about the amount of sand that a towel will attract and bring back into the home!)
Oak Park, just one over from
Shelley Beach, is a great little grassy area that backs onto the shore. Situated at the mouth of Port Hacking, it offers some beautiful views across to The Royal National Park. The rocky seaboard is great for dangling your feet in, or you can jump in the
ocean bath if you want to get fully submerged.
There is no kiosk or eating facilities, but it does have BBQs and amenities plus a playground for the kiddies, so it's perfect for picnics. The local council even recommends it for families; but please beware that lifeguards don't patrol the ocean baths, so you'll need to keep an eye out for each other.
It's a little bit of a
trek from Cronulla train station, so you might be better driving.
