How many times have we heard from our love ones or friends that they can't afford to go out as the bus, or train fares are just too expensive? We often hear that their pension is just not enough to socialise. Much coveted outings are very rare, so a lot of pensioners tend to depend on their family or a community event that provides free transport for help.

I stumbled upon this card when a work colleague requested if I can get a few NSW Seniors Card forms from ANZ bank. A few resident from the Nursing Home that she volunteers once a week apparently requested it. She explained what the forms are for, which prompted me to do further research, so here it is.

What is a NSW Seniors Card?

Seniors Card is a FREE discount card granting members the access to NSW Government transport, concessions, travel and discounts.from various businesses.

The scheme was introduced by the NSW State Government in 1992 to encourage older people to enjoy an active and healthy retirement.The applicant must be a permanent resident of NSW and 60 years of age or over. Provided that you are not working more than 20 hours a week, you are still eligible to apply for the Seniors Card.

The Senior Card Scheme was introduced by the NSW State Government in 1992 to encourage older people to enjoy an active and healthy lifestyle upon their retirement. The scheme is not assets-tested, free to join and the applicant is not required to disclose their income.

Members will benefit from discounts provided by businesses in NSW and also entitles them to purchase a Pensioner Excursion Ticket (PET) for $2.50. It will enable the card holder to travel all day on a Government and private bus service within metropolitan and outside metro bounded by Port Stephens, Lithgow, Kiama, Maitland, ferry services run by the government in Sydney and Newcastle and also allowing the card holder to travel by City Rail services within an area bounded by Dungog, Scone, Bathurst, Goulburn, Bomaderry;

If you wish to travel outside these areas using the Country Link train or Coach service, a single journey Country Link Pensioner Excursion Ticket can be purchase for $2.50. These cover Nowra, Moss Vale, Lithgow, Muswellbrook, Dungog, Karuah and Booral provided that a booking must be made by calling 13 22 32 or by visiting a CountryLink travel centre.

The intended travel must be finalised within 7 days from the date the ticket was purchased.

Unfortunately the Pensioner Excursion Tickets benefits does not extend on services provided by the Manly Jet Cat ferry, privately run Airport service and the Moore Park special event bus service, but nevertheless PET can be used on regular services if you are heading to the same destinations.

Senior Card members from other Australian States and Territories can also use their Pensioner Excursion Ticket or half fare concession ticket for travel in Sydney metro area.
