When my friend asked me to meet her for coffee in the West End, I expected the usual chain coffee shop, but I was pleasantly surprised she had found a hidden gem.
Notes, Music & Coffee is on St. Martins Lane and is situated in the middle of Leicester Square and Charing Cross stations. The idea behind it is that it is half coffee bar, half music and film shop. In addition to coffee it sells an array of DVDs, old school musicals, CDs and Foreign Films.
The shop itself would not look out of place in a French film with its relaxing decor, and inviting environment. We order tea for two and it is brought to us and 'pressed' (if that is the posh term), in front of us, and we are told they will bring over an extra refill later, so it doesn't get cold. Perfect if you are enjoying a girly gossip and keep forgetting to drink your tea.
The background is a mixture of relaxing jazz and a plasma screen with clips of classic movies, such as Mary Poppins, Oliver and My Fair Lady. It is relaxed, and romantic. All the tables are wooden, with elaborate lighting fittings. It would be perfect for an early date as it is open until 9pm during the week, or for catching up with friends after work. They also serve a variety of pastries and sandwiches, and the wide windows make it perfect if you would like to sit and watch the world go by.
