A special nostalgia night is to be held at the Capri Theatre at Goodwood to celebrate 75 years of operation as a picture theatre, on
Saturday 8th October, 2016.
The main feature will be the 1941 movie, in Technicolor
Blossoms in the Dust (PG), starring
Greer Garson and
Walter Pigeon. Patrons will be able to experience what it was like to go to the movies at a time when this theatre first opened in 1941.
Blossoms in the Dust is the fictionalised telling of the story of Edna Gladney (Greer Garson), who helped create a day care centre for orphaned and illegitimate children to find homes with matching parents, in spite of opposition from some of the respectable citizens in Texas.
The evening will be hosted by Adelaide legend of television and movies, Anne Wills.
The history of the Capri Theatre will be reflected in the various short features to be screened. Apart from God Save the Queen, a newsreel and cartoon, there will be some special trailers of films which have been shown at important phases in the history of the Capri. There will also be an audio-visual presentation highlighting the Wurlitzer organ and the restoration of this heritage theatre back to its 1941 glory.
As you enter the theatre's foyer you will be greeted by the sounds of a piano playing by
Peter Hale. Drinks will be served at the licensed bar from 6.00 pm. The mighty
Wurlitzer organ will rise centre-stage and
John Slater will play from 6.45 pm and again during interval. There will be Tray Boys serving Jumbo ice-creams during intermission.
Everyone is welcome to come along and experience what it was like to have a special night at the movies back in 1941 and also support the Capri Restoration Fund. The Capri is sponsored by another great South Australian institution,
Haigh's Chocolates, which will be available for your pleasure at the refreshment
bar.
