The tradition of country fairs goes back centuries, but far from being a quaint custom from days long gone by, they're still extremely popular, providing wholesome old-fashioned fun for people of all ages. Whether you're a city family with children eager to see real farm animals up close, an older person who'd prefer to check out the exhibitions in the pavilions or a group of teenagers up for a good time, country shows provide this and much more, giving an insight into a way of life that's far removed from the urban rat-race most of us are so familiar with.

Situated approximately 97 kilometres from Perth, Northam is the largest inland town in Western Australia not founded on mining, and therefore it's hardly surprising that its annual agricultural show is one of the liveliest in the state. Just a one-hour drive from the city, it's the perfect family day-trip with many interesting things to see and do.

As one of the state's foremost country carnivals, much of the action at Northam Show centres on the main show-ring. There are enough showjumping, dressage and carriage displays to keep the most ardent horse-lover happy, while there are plenty of other prize-winning livestock to look at in the pavilions, including cattle, sheep, poultry and dairy goats.

For those interested in horticulture, there are also exhibitions displaying fruits, vegetables, floriculture and farm products, while arts, crafts and cooking enthusiasts will drool at the exquisite array of goodies displayed in other pavilions. Of course, one of the big draw-cards at any show is side-show alley, and this year there are loads of cool rides and other entertainment for both the young and young-at-heart.

In conclusion, if you're looking for great family entertainment that won't stretch your budget too far, a day spent at the Northam Show is something that will go down well with the entire family. This year's Northam Show will be held on Friday 12th and Saturday 13th of September at Jubilee Park. Priced at just $5.00 per person for entry, it's an absolute bargain, in comparison to the larger, big-city events. To learn more about Northam Show, go to their website or email [email protected].
