Day-trips are great for locals and tourists alike. They offer a change of pace, change of scenery, and are a refreshing way to spend your time off. One escape that's great for Sydneysiders is Newcastle, a smaller port city with a slower seaside ambience. In particular, a nice spot to unwind at is right on the coast at Nobbys Beach.

Find a warm, sunny day and embark on your leisurely 170km (2 hours, 15 minutes, traffic permitting) cruise up the M1. Alternatively catch the Intercity train from Central which also makes for scenic transit. If you feel like site-seeing on the way, you're in luck as you'll pass the peaceful Central Coast with little gems like Pearl Beach .

This Newcastle beach is bound by Nobbys Headland, which was originally an island, sighted in 1770 by Captain James Cook. It was initially joined to the foreshore by Macquarie Pier in 1846. In place of this now stands the Hunters River entrance wall. This break-wall collected sand, which over time led to the birth of Nobbys Beach. It has since become a popular hangout among families and surfers.

Today, you'll find a soft white sand bank lining sparkling seawater. It's the ideal setting to unwind and enjoy a cool, refreshing splash among the waves. There is plenty of space. Choose a spot to set up on for the day. Relax with conveniences right beside the beach - amenities block, free BBQs, kiosk. Nothing like good old chips on the beach.

If you feel breaking up your day, there are also some sites of interest next to Nobbys. Just to the north you'll find Nobbys Lighthouse . Check this out along with the view back over the beach. To the south you'll find a series of ocean baths, including the Historic Soldier's Baths Rock Pool.

If you're into surfing, this is quite a hotspot for reef-based spots. You have The Wedge just off the headland here, Stratts Spit, The Spot and more. Not up to speed with my surf lingo but this page offers further details. As Nobbys is Newcastle's highest profile beach, it is patrolled Mondays to Saturdays year-round (and Sundays during swim season). The beach itself has also become a popular place in which to learn kite-surfing.

Whether you're looking for a relaxing day or one full of action, Nobbys can help. This picturesque Newcastle beach with a relaxing, friendly atmosphere makes for a pleasant day away from it all for Sydneysiders. Bring the family, bring the surfboard, and enjoy!
