Aussies are obsessed with dance. TV ratings for dance-related shows are through the roof all thanks to clever programming and a country's love affair with the sport. (We all saw how quickly that
Zumba thing took off!)
It's no surprise then that No Lights, No Lycra is fast becoming a grand success.
No Lights, No Lycra is dance class meets nightclub, but unlike the former, there are no instructors, and unlike the latter, there's no booze, no drugs and absolutely no lycra allowed. Oh, and they switch off the lights!
The dance craze has proved so popular that it spread from Brooklyn to Berlin in less than a year and now it has moved into our own backyard. Once a week, confident Melburnians make their way to the community hall in Fitzroy to shake their booties in the darkness.
Classes run for 90 minutes and cost $5, and since the music is random, there's something for every taste. A class could begin with music from
The Lion King Soundtrack, move on to a bit of 90s rock and end with some current house music. There are no dance rules, and as such, punters are advised to leave their inhibitions at the door and dance like nobody's watching. (Just check out this

If you still need convincing, perhaps the health-nut in you will be pleased to know that as well as being extremely entertaining, dance does plenty of great things for the body too, like assisting with weight control and reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease. And just like all other forms of exercise, dance helps the endorphins flow, so you'll leave feeling happy and energised!
Class attendees, you're advised to wear light, comfortable gear that you can move in freely, but please remember to leave the lycra at home.
