With tough liquor laws challenging many of Melbourne's music venues in recent times, it's encouraging to discover that a thriving live music scene still rocks much of Melbourne and surrounds. In fact, it not only rocks, it also grooves to rhythm and blues and cruises to super smooth soul – especially at Nighthawk Blues about half an hour from the city in Mentone. At this place you can even get a little silly with a touch of rockabilly.

So you might have noticed on the website that it's now officially called Nighthawk Café Bar Restaurant (because they do all of that well too), but this local institution has been Nighthawk Blues for as long as I remember, so I'm sticking with that, even if they play a whole bunch of other music styles.

What I really like about this place is that it's warm and welcoming, has plenty of dance space and isn't head-banging. It's a got a more relaxed and laid-back vibe than some of the city venues, and is as friendly as ever.

It's the sort of place where you can rock up on your own and feel okay because someone will say g'day and have a chat before you know it.

In terms of the music, it features some of Melbourne's best artists and occasional big-name interstate and international artists.

Check out the gig guide, but keep an eye on it for new bands and special nights. Better still, sign up for the newsletter and then you don't have to remember to check.

If you like to sing the blues, you might even like to jam it up or practice your vocal skills on an open-mike night on a Thursday.

The menu looks yum and they often have various specials and incentives (like a free wine or free entry) if you buy a main meal. Too good!

If you want to check out what else is on around town, check out the ultimate authority on the subject, Beat Magazine's gig guide.
