New's Year Eve in Brisbane

Home > Things to do in Brisbane > Community Events
Event: 31/12/2010
Should auld acquaintance be forgot
And never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And auld lang syne!

New Year's Eve – full of reminiscing and hope that the coming year will bring good fortune, good cheer and happiness to all on earth. How best to enjoy the last night of 2010? It depends on whether you want to be part of a big crowd or whether you'd rather reflect and look forward with family and friends at home.

Celebrating New Year's Eve in Brisbane

South Bank is the place to be for families to celebrate New Year's Eve in Brisbane. From 4pm until 11pm the Cultural Forecourt will become an outdoor movie theatre with family friendly movies. At 8:30pm and all importantly midnight, the Brisbane skies will light with a multicolour pyrotechnic display. Also happening at South Bank is the New Year's Concert featuring British India; tickets to the concert are $20.

Want to celebrate the end of 2010 in style? Then the Brisbane New Year Hollywood Ball 2011 or Byblos French Carnival is the place for you. Enjoy a red carpet evening and imagine you're seeing the new year as a Hollywood starlet or Parisian socialite.

Find the Fun at Home

Don't want to go to the hassle of finding a babysitter or parking spot or who'll drive or how we will get there? You can still have a great New Year's Eve celebration at home. Start by decorating the house, with a theme if you like, or otherwise just bring down the Christmas decorations and put up streamers, glow sticks, balloons and wall stickers. Spartys at Spotlight have a good range of decorations and costumes to make your home seem like the Number 1 party venue in town.

What fun is a party without some good old fashioned party games – after a few drinks why not get out the Karaoke or play spin the bottle with a twist (instead of a kiss, the person the bottle faces must tell the group their resolution for 2011). Another game is choosing your top tens of 2010 – whether they are sporting moments, songs, movies, celebrity couples (or break ups), embarrassing moments – the list is endless. Have everyone bring along their best cocktail or mocktail recipe and conduct a judging session. Record people's goals for 2011 so that at the end of next year you can see who kept to their word and how many people broke down along the way – make it a challenge and offer a prize for the person who sticks to their resolution the longest.

Whatever option you choose for celebrating New Year's Eve, remember to have fun and stay safe.
