The inner-city suburb of New Farm is a contrast of Brisbane’s old and new and nowhere is this more on show than at its fortnightly Saturday morning farmers’ market.
Held in the forecourt of the landmark
Brisbane Powerhouse arts centre - an imposing reminder of the area’s industrial past – the market is a stylish haven for New Farm’s modern-day urban dwellers.
Here designer sunnies, posh prams and pampered pooches prowl the bustling open-air market and its collection of more than 100 food stalls.
There are now various
Jan Power’s Farmers’ Markets held regularly throughout Brisbane and the Powerhouse Markets take place at New Farm on the second and fourth Saturday of every month.
This is the perfect way to kickstart your weekend. The produce is fresh and fantastic, so bring a bag to stock up. Have Dutch pancakes or Indonesian satay sticks for breakfast with a twist, washed down on the go with a gourmet coffee.
You can even pick up all the weekend newspapers if you fancy a more leisurely feast on the grass at neighbouring New Farm Park on the banks of the Brisbane River.
There’s specialty imported foods from throughout the world, delectable fudges, wild venison meats and exotic homemade jams - the choices go on and on.
The main game for many though is people watching the passing parade of characters, both human and four-legged.
The dogs of New Farm’s new upwardly mobile residents are particularly catered for, with a special doggie section offering a range of canine treats including cupcakes for dogs (who would have thought!). Something for everyone, indeed.
