Many people know Greenwich for its famous Observatory and park. However, the
Maritime Museum provides another opportunity to explore the history and rich architecture of this beautiful spot in South East London.
Situated on the southern edge of Greenwich Park, the museum focuses on maritime history through the ages. The building itself is a striking blend of tradition and modernity and the open spaces and vast glass windows provide a pleasant environment in which to wander through the ages in a relaxed and unhurried manner.
The museum largely comprises permanent displays, including 'Rank and Style', which celebrates the history of naval costumes; and the 'Passengers Gallery', where you can find out what it was like to travel aboard one of the first great liners. There are also a number of temporary exhibitions concentrating on specific periods of naval history, or important events.
Many rooms and areas include hands-on exhibits and there's also a special kids' area on the top floor ('The Bridge'), so it's definitely a family-friendly destination. What's more, once you've finished inside, you've got 183 acres of Royal Park to explore!
The museum is located about ten minutes' walk from Greenwich DLR and about 15 minutes walk from the train station. Other travel options include buses or boats, which run regularly to a number of destinations.
