Looking to get out of the house and into the sunshine this spring? Try your hand at cherry picking at the Young Cherry Festival.

A two hour drive from Canberra, located on Olympic Highway, Young is a small country town with a small population of around 7,000.

Cherries are somewhat of a town specialty, being grown in the area since 1847. Numerous varieties of cherries are grown and picked each year, the ideal time for harvesting being early November to late December.

Young also boasts a range of other stone fruits, such as peaches, prunes, plums, nectarines, persimmons and strawberries. These are exported around the world and are also available for picking at various times throughout the year.

From the 30th of November to the 2nd of December, Young will celebrate the 63rd anniversary of the National Cherry Festival. Also this year, the town celebrates the Australian Year of the Farmer, which makes it an ideal time to support local farmers by picking your own cherries at the numerous farms around the town.

As well as all things cherry related, the town will also host a street parade, markets and stalls selling local produce, Bush Poetry and the Cherry Festival Carnival. Enjoy the quality cafes, restaurants and wineries packed with locally produced food that the region has to offer. There is even a range of local pubs to quench your thirst with an ice cold beer at the end of a hard day of cherry picking.
