Dig out your unused disposables for families in need
A pack of nappies may not appear expensive on the outset, but any parent will confirm that over time buying disposables eats into the weekly budget.

Unfortunately, this means many cannot afford such necessities, and as such, an array of health problems occur for disadvantaged families that struggle to buy nappies when putting food on table is priority.

Luckily, a collaborative community initiative exists to help alleviate the burden of nappy buying for struggling families. The Nappy Collective collects leftover, unused disposable nappies and redistributes them to organisations supporting families in crisis or in need.

The Nappy Collective

The Nappy Collective has collection points to round up unused nappies all over the country for a period of two weeks in February, July and October. One such nappy finding mission is about to begin, calling for unused nappies to be donated using easy drop boxes found in more than 80 collection points across Melbourne, Geelong, Newcastle, Sydney, Byron Bay, Perth and Brisbane.

At the end of each two week collective, a volunteer sorting day brings families and friends together to sort nappies by size from newborn to junior pull-ups and all types in-between.

Nappies are packed and distributed to organisations that support families in crisis or in need such as Barnados Australia, St Kilda Mums and many more. Some beneficiaries have special requests such as Melbourne City Mission that require donated swimmer nappies for disadvantaged mothers to join mum and bub swimming sessions that encourage bonding and infant development.

In March 2014, The Nappy Collective successfully collected over 26,000 in 22 collection points in Melbourne and Sydney, now collection locations have increased, the initiative hopes to collect thousands more nappies for needy families.

I only read about the nappy collection yesterday in the local leader newspaper. It's such a great idea. I've got some to donate, just wish collection points were a bit closer. Great article :)
