My Sister’s Wardrobe

Home > Things to do in Melbourne >
Published June 25th 2009
If the women who run My Sister’s Wardrobe have their way, just as the 70s are known for swapping wives (and husbands), the new millennium will be remembered for a different kind of swapping – clothes swapping.

The concept of a clothing exchange began as way for fashionistas to support their fashion addictions without harming the environment. Participants arrive at the My Sister’s Wardrobe venue with items they wish to get rid of, and are given a button for every item. Then they can browse through garments brought by other participants and take home items that number the amount of buttons.

Women can leave the event with several outfits that would normally cost hundreds of dollars, without the stress of big shopping centres, and knowing it’s better for the environment because no land has been cleared, no water wasted, and no carbon has been released into the atmosphere.

The vibe at clothing exchanges is excellent. People love seeing others look at the clothes they have worn, and those shopping love hearing the stories behind the items they have chosen. Unlike shopping centres where people push past you and will fight you for the last bargain, there is a real sense of friendship and community.

Be warned though, clothing exchanges will only accept garments they know they can move, so make sure your discarded clothes are in good condition and are washed and ironed.

I do find it difficult to part with my beloved clothes, but I'll admit there are a few items that just sit in my wardrobe unworn and with no occasion to whip them out. Perhaps it's time to give this clothing exchange a go!
