Back in 1969 astronaut Neil Armstrong stepped out of Apollo 11 and onto the moon stating " one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind".

Brisbane's annual MS Moonlight Walk is an opportunity for us all to make one or two small steps in an endeavour to raise funds to fight Multiple Sclerosis.

Multiple Sclerosis, more commonly known as MS, is a disease that attacks the central nervous system. Because it interferes with the transmission of nerve impulses through the brain, spinal chord and optic nerves, it causes problems with muscle control, vision and balance.

There are over 23,000 people in Australia living with this disease , each with varying degrees of affliction. My 27 year old daughter is one of them.

On Friday, 23rd October, the Moonlight Walk will commence at 6 pm from the Cultural Forecourt at South Bank Parklands following the bends of the Brisbane River.

There are two walking courses from which to choose. Both have been designed to be relaxing and safe, and cater for people of all ages and fitness levels.

5 km walk: This course passes through the beautiful esplanade and over the Goodwill Bridge to the Botanic Gardens, returning to South Bank.

10 km Walk: Crosses the Story Bridge from Kangaroo Point into the city, then along the Riverside, through the Botanical Gardens, back across the Goodwill Bridge, returning to South Bank.

Don't panic! The route will be signposted along the way.

Why is it called the Moonlight Walk? We may not be walking on the moon, but we will be walking under the glow of a full moon. What a lovely way to experience the Brisbane River.

You can register for the Moonlight Walk by visiting www.moonlightwalk.com.au or by contacting 07 3840 0828.

Entrance Fees for this event vary. The earlier you register, the cheaper the fee. (Commencing around $15 if you enrol now, increasing to $30.00 closer to the date)

It is all explained on the website.

This is probably as close to a walk on the moon I'll ever get …
