If you are just about to dive into your summer swimming program you might want to consider training towards the 24 Hour Mega Swim which is suitable for all ages and swimming abilities.

Okay, so it does attract some swim club teams but it also attracts lots of groups of friends who are in it for the fun and just want to help raise money to assist people living with MS.

As you can see from some of the photos this teamwork does tend to build a sense of fun and camaraderie.

It is a 24 hour relay where you participate as little or a much as can to help your team through. It starts from 10am on Saturday until 10am on the Sunday. You can have up to 15 people in your team and each team must have a swimmer in the water for every minute of that 24 hours.

So no doubt there is a lot of sleeping going on as well as attempts to keep each other awake for the next shift.

Some people just roster themselves on for a few minutes while other more gung-ho and do a couple of hours at a stretch.

If you enter now it gives you the summer to prepare. With swimming as with running it takes time to build up endurance.

Each participant has their own online fundraising page and raises money by enlisting the support of family and friends. You can joint an existing relay team or you can start your own.

Points are awarded to each team with one point for every $10 raised and one point for every 500 m swum.

The winning team's name is then etched on the perpetual plaque at each swimming pool.

It seems a great way to build up your own physical fitness and to help out with a worthy cause as well.
