'Mothers', is a dramatic showcase of new Australian creative writing showing at the Roxbury Hotel in Glebe. It was created by Joy Roberts, an artistic director and producer after her experiences of becoming a mum herself. The show dramatises the individual and often quite poignant stories of 9 mothers from birth through to early childhood.

The space at the Roxbury is quite intimate with tables at the back and chairs set up in rows up front. Large blocks with the words put together stated 'Mothers' which proceeded to be the props for the length of the show.

The play opens with mother Bridget going through the motions of preparing the kids' breakfast and playing the role of all mums - multi-tasker extraordinaire. The next story focusses on Carole retelling stories back in the day when motherhood was about reading "the book" which assured her she was normal and her baby was normal. This story is interlaced with a young mother Kyla dealing with teenage pregnancy and her angst at losing her teenage years. This adolescent view of bringing a baby into the world of multimedia when still a juvenile herself is very contemporary but interestingly softened when displayed with the strong protective unbreakable bond she shares with her baby.

Judy is another character who is adamant she does not want to be a mother but things quickly change after a period of "Russian Roulette" results in a baby. Asma's character is a Muslin immigrant with illusions of being immersed in a vibrant metropolitan hub but in reality is finding it difficult to meet the challenges of looking after a baby and dealing with depression.

There are further stories about the struggles of breastfeeding, overcoming the unrealistic modern day pressures to succeed at motherhood and the joys discovered when finally being able to bond with one's child. I don't want to give all the stories away but the play ends with words of wisdom from all the characters tying the various stories together. Each actress is worth noting with believable delivery and generally good comedic timing.

This is a wonderfully honest collaboration of stories with many elements that every person could relate to. I encourage you to attend and experience the humour and darkness in the journey of motherhood. These stories are lesser known and hence you realise the trials and tribulation of motherhood is different for every woman which makes you appreciate the women in your life. With Mother's Day coming up, this is a great tribute to mothers and time to be thankful for all the unsaid mundane things we probably all take for granted.

This event is part of the Mampalooza Festival, dedicated to serving, promotion, celebrating, encouraging, inspiring and awakening all mothers through Media, Commerce, connection and performing arts. Benefits from the show go to the Gidget Foundation aimed to promote a community where parents are nurtured and valued, enabling them to enjoy this special time with their young children.

The performance is on from 2nd, 3rd 230pm, 9th 8pm, 10th 2.30pm May @ Roxbury Glebe
