Mother's Day is a beautiful time of year, when we can all thank our mums and mother figures in our lives for everything that they do. Sometimes it can be an aunt, family friend, step-mum or grandmother who have helped us in ways that can't be re-paid. The beauty of mums is that you don't have to spend a fortune to make her happy on Mother's Day - whatever you do will be appreciated. A picnic down the park, a home-made cake or a bunch of flowers from your garden will all make her smile. If you want to spoil her however, there are Mothers Day lunches and events held around the city which will surprise and delight. The following are just 12, however many more will be advertised in the weeks before the big day. If you see any that your mum may like, book in early as they fill up fast. Then buy some flowers, turn off your phone and spend the day making her feel like the special person she is. She deserves it.

1/ The Southern Cross Club will be having Mother's Day celebrations in most of their clubs across the city. In particular The Yacht Club at Yarralumla will have a Mothers Day breakfast and lunch with views over Lake Burley Griffin. Southern Cross Cruises will also have a Mother's Day breakfast and lunch on board their cruise boat - with a rose and bubbly on arrival. Prices start from $50. See here for details.

2/ The Viking Clubs will be hosting a range of Mother's Day breakfast, brunch, lunch and dinner options at their Chisholm, Erindale, Lanyon and Tuggeranong Town Centre Clubs. Enjoy a range of delicious lunch items including pork belly, prawns, smoked salmon, pan fried barramundi fillet and a range of decadent desserts. See here for details.

3/ Onred restaurant at the top of Red Hill will be hosting a Mother's Day banquet lunch, with spectacular views over the city from one of Canberra's highest vantage points. The menu includes mustard crusted roast beef, pork belly, prawns and more. The cost is $75 per adult, $50 children. See here for details.

4/ Marble and Grain **restauarant is located in The Avenue Hotel %%in Braddon and is described as a "modern and stylish European Steak House". They will be hosting a sumptuous and stylish Mother's Day 3 course lunch with glass of champagne on arrival. Cost is $85 per person. 5/ Poachers Pantry %%**in the Canberra Wine District will be hosting a Mother's Day Lunch with a special menu just for Mum. This leafy restaurant is a popular venue for Mother's Day, so ensure you book early for a table. There is nothing more relaxing than a sunny day at Poachers Pantry with fresh local produce, before wine tasting at the regions finest wineries. See here for details.

6/ Hotel Realm%% **in Barton will be hosting High Tea on the Terrace between 12pm and 2pm. There will be a selection of finely made French cakes and tarts, delicate savouries and traditional scones, accompanied with TWG fine teas and freshly brewed coffee. High Tea is a regular event for this venue, with the Mother's Day event the most popular of the year. Prices start from $50. See here for details.

7/ Hyatt Hotel Canberra will be hosting a Mother's Day buffet lunch and dinner in the Promenade Cafe with seafood and dessert stations.There will also be a chocolate-themed Afternoon Tea in their Tea Lounge, with a glass of Lerida Estate Zenzi sparkling on arrival. 8/ Greenhills Conference Centre in Stromlo, Weston Creek, will be hosting a Mother's Day Lunch with singer Amber Nicholls (from a previous season of The Voice) to entertain throughout the lunch. See here for details closer to the date.

9/ Hotel Kurrajong in Barton will be hosting a Mother's Day High Tea between 11am - 4pm. The cost is $55 per person including a glass of sparkling wine on arrival. This historical hotel is steeped in political history, with Prime Minister Ben Chifley living at the hotel throughout his parliamentary career. See here for details.

10/ The Mothers Day Classic %%**is a fun run that is held all around Australia each year to raise money for breast cancer research. Here in Canberra, the run starts at Rond Terrace at Commonwealth Park and participants can choose between a 5km walk, run or 10km run. See here for details and how to register.

11/ Canberra Glassworks will be holding workshops to make a glass flower or paperweight for Mother's Day. This workshop is a one-on-one lesson for teenagers over 14 to make mum a hand crafted present, or for arty mums to make their own. It costs $80 for a 20 minute class. 12/ The Canberra Theatre will be have two performances to pick from on the evening of May 14th. For mums who love comedy, it will be the last night of Akmal at 8pm and it is also the last performances of Velvet at 3pm and 6pm. If your mum loves live shows, both would be memorable!
