Whether you are a mum or going to be one or you just know someone who is one, or you are just feeling stressed and need a good laugh, Motherhood the musical will leave you feeling happy, joyful and optimistic about life.
The show, with over 90 minutes of drama and music and more than 15 songs is enjoyable and supremely entertaining. Judging by the fact that the open night was packed with eager audiences and there were less than a handful of seats left, it is very evident that the show is hugely popular.
The play is about 4 friends, 3 of whom are mums and the 4th (Amy) is naive 'to-be mum' expecting her first child. Amy is very excited about her first baby and opens the show with a song 'I'm having a baby'. Her friends organise a surprise baby shower where each one talks about their motherhood stories(read horrors) including disposable diapers, naughty kids, lazy husbands, their mums, changes in their body post pregnancy, weak bladders etc. Of the 3 friends, Barb, is a stay at home mum who can't seem to get time for herself. Trisha who is a single mum shares a similar story. Brooke is a working mum trying to balance her work life and kids.
The songs are a big hit and are delivered flawlessly. The theme song seems to be 'The Kids are finally asleep'. The happy crowd swayed and clapped along when that was sung. Another great hit was the 'Costco queen' song that Brooke sings and the 'I drive a mini van' which is Trisha's song where she recollects her days of driving a red convertible and compares that to the current mini van with 2 kids at the back and 4 on the floor. The song sequences are increasingly funny and a few of them touch some adult themes.
There are some emotional elements of Motherhood too, being that of when the child is born and when they are grown up and leave home. The play leaves a happy feeling in the heart of the audiences and reminds all how special mum and motherhood is.
