As you arrive at the Western entrance to the Victorian town of Morwell, you'll discover country Victoria's finest public garden, the internationally recognised
. Cited as an outstanding example of community achievement, this garden is one of only two Australian gardens to hold the
World Federation of Rose Societies "Award of Garden Excellence."
Comprised of four acres of gardens with 150 beds containing 3,000 blooms, the area is laid out in sections. These hold over 395 varieties, each type meticulously tagged. There are roses bred exclusively in Australia and New Zealand, old fashioned roses, cottage gardens and spectacular climbing frames full of highly perfumed varieties. The gazebo is decorated with climbing roses surrounded by a rockery filled with both English and modern varieties. In this garden of delight, the old favourites mix with the hybrids and the shrubs, the miniatures, groundcovers and the weeping varieties.

Equipped with picnic tables and amenities, arches, arbors and a pergola, this haven of tranquillity is only one and a half hours from Melbourne, entrance is free and the park never closes. Blooms are best viewed from November to April.
If you're after a slice of its history, The was opened in late 1992 following an idea from a local Councillor the previous year. A Public Meeting followed and a Steering Committee was formed and with support from Council, the public, service clubs, local businesses and the Rose Society of Victoria, funds were raised for its construction. It is maintained by a Committee of Management with the Latrobe City Council assisting with routine maintenance and is strongly supported by the dedicated group "The Friends of the Garden" and new members are always welcome. Should you be interested, Pat Claasens, who can be contacted on 0434 958 962 would be delighted to hear from you.
