You have to love the people on the Mornington Peninsula. When they decide to do something they do it with exuberance and artistic flare.

In spring they turn their talents to creating scarecrows. Not to scare the birds away but to attract tourists. And they have a whole lot of fun in the process.

They create all sorts of oddities in all kinds of guises depending on the setting. If it is near the beach it is likely to be a surfer scarecrow.

If it is near a olive grove then sticks from the grove will be used in the construction. They have a highly unconventional take on what a scarecrow is. Some of their scarecrows are even animated.

Then they create a touring trail so you can view their creations. Following this takes you to all kinds of tucked away galleries, farm-gates, orchards, cottages, mazes and cafes. The full path will take you from Moorooduc to Merricks, from Red Hill to Shoreham, from Main Ridge to Arthurs Seat.

But while attracting visitors is one aim, especially in the forthcoming school holidays, the main aim is all the fun and creativity they can have when when creating their creatures.

They run a competition amongst themselves for the best scarecrow and the winner receives the much coveted Scarecrow Trophy. This winner is decided on October 6th at the specially named Scarecrow Market on Red Hill Market day.

Many of the local businesses get into the spirit of the occasion by offering scarecrow specials. You will find deals on accommodation packages, wine, mazes, spa services not to mention scarecrow inspired dishes.

One of the school holiday specials is at the Enchanted Maze Garden. You can start the day with a tube slide ride and a maze discovery then grab a map and follow the Scarecrow Trail. This cost $29 Adult and $19 Child.
