I was walking through Perth's café capital, Fremantle, looking for a place for breakfast when something caught my eye.

A teddy bear Christmas tree stands at the entrance of Moore & Moore, a multi-purpose warehouse turned café. The place is strewn with mismatched furniture and old, worn out chairs that strangely fit right in with the antique feel of the heritage-listed premises that Moore & Moore resides in.

As we took a seat, a person came to clear our table and ask for our order. She had a baby on her back and as I thought she was a customer, I thought this was strange. It turned out she was a waitress - needless to say, the café is children-friendly, complete with a kids' corner with toys.

Drinks and food orders arrived quickly, despite it being the busy lunch peak hour. All of Moore & Moore's cold drinks are made using their homemade syrup, making this iced chocolate a refreshingly guilty treat.

Even though it was past lunch time, we were thrilled that 'breakfast' extends until 2:30pm. The menu is a good mix of light breakfast dishes and more substantial lunch options, with a full page of beverages to choose from. The sturdy tower of smoked salmon, poached eggs, broccolini, asparagus, lemon feta and slow-roasted tomato on Turkish toast was a beauty to look at and eat.

The Tuscan-style Sambo is a dish from their lunch menu. This leaning tower of sandwich is constructed with a juicy beef patty, sandwiched between grilled pumpkin, cheddar, caramelised onions, greens, tomato salsa and homemade hummus. And if that was not enough, a side of couscous finishes off the dish, making it a dish big enough to last comfortably until dinner time.

I fell in love with the burnt butter, sage and roast pumpkin mash, which had a creamy, indulgent, melt-in-your-mouth buttery texture.

The two poached eggs that sat on top of the pumpkin mash, Turkish bread, rocket and tomato relish were poached to perfection, with yolks that gushed out and oozed over the rest of the dish with a gentle pierce of a fork. The Turkish bread is a great vessel to soak up all the liquid, and makes the dish even better considering there is no sauce.

There are plenty of seating options to choose from to soak up the atmosphere of both inside and outside the café. Ranging from tables on the front pathway to people watch, inside the spacious and airy dining area and big courtyard at the back with its big shady umbrellas, makes Moore & Moore the ideal place to relax in the sunshine on a lazy summer day.

The cafe's other personality is a contemporary art gallery for exhibitions, promoting local artists and designers of the community and is situated just above the café. It certainly makes Moore & Moore an interesting place to visit often, as you might find yourself loving it more and more.
