I have spoken elsewhere about the Moondyne Country Convention Centre but I would like to to tell you a little bit about the food they serve.

Let me be clear, Moondyne is not in any sense a restaurant, but a country retreat and convention centre. Most of the chalets are self-catering, but meals are available and, given the opportunity, I recommend you definitely try at least one meal if you can.

We were lucky enough to have both dinner and breakfast at Moondyne and I have seldom had food as good.

Being what it is, the menu is more Table d'hôte than A la Carte. The dining hall is curiously both big and cosy at the same time with a great wood burning stove and softly glowing pine polished to a fare-thee-well.

We began our dinner with a soup, a rich roasted carrot and cumin broth. This is not a combination I am familiar with, cumin and coriander usually go with sweet potato or pumpkin, but the two go together beautifully. Rich and surprisingly subtle the flavours are well balanced and delicious.

Our main was a whole fillet roasted and served with a crust of fresh herbs. Wherever possible Peter and Christine source their produce as locally as possible and their meat comes from Midland's leading butcher Tony's House of Tender Meats, who as we all know supplies superb produce.

This particular fillet was magnificent and magnificently cooked by Peter who let the flavour and natural goodness of the meat speak for itself with minimal dressing other than the fresh herbs.

A whole fillet tapers in thickness of course, so at once one end is deliciously rare and the other more medium, catering for all tastes in one piece.

Now I am a carnivore of many, many years standing and I love meat and I love well-cooked meat and I have to say this was high up there amongst the best I ever have eaten. Tender, tasty, rich and everything one could possibly hope for.

This came with side dishes of green beans and slivered almonds and a butter sauce and a platter of roasted root vegetables - perfect accompaniments.

We did we our very best, but oddly enough, not even I could eat an entire fillet and, in addition, I knew what was coming up for sweet - Sticky Date Pudding.

And given the quality of the food thus far, I knew it was going to be something a bit special, and it was, rounding out as perfect a meal as I had in a very long time.

I began by saying this isn't a restaurant, and it isn't, but given the joint skills of Peter and Christine I wish it was.
