Montville is always a good option for a day trip or weekend away but there's an extra attraction on the second Saturday of the month when this hinterland village holds its monthly market. The next market will be on April 13.

This is a charming market run by local residents; as much a social gathering as a shopping excursion.

The market starts at 7am and you should get going before breakfast so you can tuck into pancakes at the market. Why mess up your kitchen when you can have someone else cook you organic buckwheat pancakes topped with fresh fruit? There are also savoury and gluten-free pancakes, and bacon-and-egg burgers or sausages.

The dining area is lovely with fresh flowers on the tables, local kids taking your order and tea that comes in a pot with a hand-knitted tea-cosy. You'll also get an excellent coffee at the coffee cart.

Once you're fuelled up with carbs and caffeine, it's time to browse the stalls. First to the bread stall for a sourdough loaf from Les and Lesley at Crystal Waters. The fruit and nut loaf is delicious and so is the five-seed loaf.

How about some jam to go on that bread? Or maybe some organic hummus and delicious smoked smallgoods? That's our idea of living off the land.

You'll also find organic vegetables, fruit, seafood, home-baked biscuits, local honey, fresh ginger, flowers and quirky stuffed toys. And there's often an activity for children; story telling or craft making.

Got a gardening question? This is the place to find an expert. Barung Landcare volunteers sell native plants and are extremely knowledgable. John Woodland grows medicinal and culinary herbs and the vegetable seedling man always has a good range and helpful advice on planting out.

The market is set up in and around the Montville Village Hall on the Village Green at the top of the Main Street. Just look for the red telephone box – resplendent in a coat of new paint.
