A trip to Darlinghurst undoubtedly ends in the tough choice of where to eat.

The first thing you notice about Monkey Mya Steak and Tequila Bar are the alluring colours and warm glow. The quirky wall hangings, music and atmosphere further entice you to enter; it's all a bit of a mystery.

The service however is not a mystery. I've never been a fan of a pushy waiter, so when mine rattled off the menu and cocktail list and just hung around staring and smiling until we told him we needed more time, I was less than impressed. It's awkward and there needs to be a balance between service and space. Luckily the food made up for it.

Monkey Mya has a bull skull mounted on the wall. That should say it all. They are serious about their steak and what delicious steak it turned out to be. Don't expect your traditional diane or mushroom pub sauces because Monkey Mya offers Mexican inspired infusions like lime and chilli aioli. The steak is sliced, cooked to perfection and served on a wooden chopping board with homemade chips and your choice of salad or veges. The chicken is just as good, tender and juicy and the Mexican flavours add another dimension to your dining experience.

This restaurant features a different fruit of the week which they use in their cocktails and as their name suggests their bar specialises in tequila, so you're definitely in for a night to remember (or not). Monkey Mya's facebook page also offers a special on Tuesdays and Thursdays where you can get wings and a Sol beer for $10.

Monkey Mys'a is open:
Tues - Sat: 4:30 pm - 11:00 pm
