I have to declare upfront that this is a regular haunt and a place I greatly enjoy visiting.
Monkey Bean is an unpretentious cafe in the heart of Toorak Village which serves great coffee and offers attentive service. It's a place where you can go and feel comfortable, even as you watch the wealth of Toorak walk and drive by.
The cafe is run by the wonderful and rather funky chef, Jedda Millington, whose friendly personality, and strong attention to customer service, ensures a good experience.
The menu is quite extensive, with an all day breakfast featuring some standards such as poached or scrambled eggs on toast ($9.50), and seasonal fruit salad ($10.50), but also some more inventive dishes such as tea poached pears (served with crème fraîche & house granola) ($12.50) and Asian mushroom omelette (a personal fave) ($16.50).
The prawn Caesar salad ($17.50) is my partner's favourite lunch dish. I regularly try the specials as I like the fact they are often based on seasonal vegetables and fruits. On a recent visit, I had 'chilli and lime marinated chicken breast served with corn, onion, rocket, coriander, tossed in a lemon & lime dressing, drizzled with balsamic glaze' ($18) from the specials board. It was light and had a well-balanced flavour (the citrus didn't overpower the other flavours in the dish) and was very nicely presented. The friend I dined with had 'summer salad with spinach, sun dried tomatoes, chorizo and mushroom with a Spanish dressing' ($18), also a special, which she enjoyed.
Monkey Bean offers a range of cakes and biscuits, including home made biscotti and rugalah that complement the excellent coffee.
Monkey Bean is open for breakfast and lunch every day of the week. For their opening hours, please refer to the
Monkey Bean website.
