Monkey Baa Theatre - 2017 Season Launch

Amidst cheering crowds and excited patrons, award-winning Monkey Baa theatre announced their fantastic lineup for 2017. Judging by Monkey Baa's success of 2016 with shows like the Peasant Prince that went on a national tour, the audience at the launch knew that 2017 is going to be a cracker of a year.

The launch was housed in the LendLease Darling Quarter theatre and hosted by the funny and talented Bali Padda, a teaching artist at Monkey Baa.

January 2017 opens up with the innovative and jaw-dropping shadow puppetry, Swamp Juice. Artist Jeff Achtem, presents shadow puppets made from household rubbish items. The show is about life in a swamp with bickering snails, a neurotic snake and an opera singing mouse. With a 3D ending, this is surely going to set the tone for the season high.

Diary of Wombat is a much-loved picture book by Jackie French and Bruce Whatley. A stage adaptation of the chaos that Mothball, the wombat, causes to human beings on a fine day is sure to be an exciting production. The launch introduced the talented team that are putting together this show and the research that went into making a production like this. For example, the choice of the cello for live stage music for this production was based on a trial with school students and their feedback. Diary of a Wombat also features exquisite puppetry and is going to be popular among young audiences.

Oddysea is a Sensorium theatre production suitable for young audiences with special needs. It's takes the audience into a magical sensory journey beneath the seas.

The Bockety World of Henry and Bucket is coming all the way from Ireland. This production by Barnstorm Theatre company is much like a modern day Laurel and Hardy story and their friendship and adventures. This is great for children 4 and over.

The popular picture book, Grug, comes to life in this Windmill Theatre company production, Grug and the rainbow. Follow Grug's adventure as he tries to catch a rainbow that always seems out of reach.

Thai-riffic is a story of a Thai boy who wants to rid himself of his Thai image. This show promises to be outright hilarious as the boy discovers his rich heritage and realises there is much to be proud about.

The Arrival, is a graphic novel by Shaun Tan that tells the tale of a migrant in a new land. Created by Spare Parts Puppet Theatre, The Arrival is sure to be a unique theatre experience.

Neighbourhood watch and Where the streets had a name are set to come to stage in school Term 3. Both these dramas are targeted towards years 7-12. Where the streets had a name is set in Palestine and is a touching story about relationships and emotions that will resonate with the audiences.

Apart from the shows, Money Baa's ever so popular playgroup will also be hosted on select dates in 2017. The playgroup is for parents and carers with children in the age group of 0-5 and runs in the foyer for free.

2017 is all set to be an exciting year for Monkey Baa and its clever monkeys.
