Momo are Tibetan dumplings, whereas Momo wholefood is a cafe in Newcastle with a Tibetan owner who serves tasty, locally sourced organic foods. Operating in Newcastle since July 2015, the owners also have Momo Wholefood Cafe at East Maitland.

Located in a lovely high ceilinged building on the corner of Hunter and Brown Street, Momo is definitely an improvement on the KFC that was previously here. The staff are friendly and happy as were the customers. The bright clean environment seemed to exude health. The menu caters for all dietary requirements, vegan to carnivore but the emphasis is on locally sourced natural, organic sustainable produce.

Daily blackboard specials increase the range of seasonal offerings.

Although not vegetarian, we chose to lunch on a vegetarian burger and the thali. The meals were delicious and we left comfortably full, but not bloated.

The thali consisted of a spicy papadam, steamed rice, yellow dhal, spiced potatoes, a Thai style green vegetable curry and a cucumber raita.

The vegetable and lentil pattie on the sour dough burger bun was soft and moist. The flavour was enhanced with beetroot relish and sliced avocado.

Highly refined mass produced food will not be found here, but they do a trade in takeaway especially for the raw cakes and coffee and they have a small selection of items for sale.
