When you are on holidays, hotels do some amazing buffet breakfasts but nothing quite beats the breakfast you get at Miss Maud's Swedish Hotel.

It really is something to write home about.

Okay, so there is the usual array of cereals but add to this the luxuriant and often creamy extras. Swiss muesli soaked in luxuriant creamy yoghurt and then mixed with finely chopped green apple. Every fruit imaginable but of particular note is the fact that they stew all their own compotes. Think of perfect round yellow peaches like orange orbed moons and plump juicy plums.

The cooked breakfast is again hotel fare such as crispy bacon, sausages, various style of eggs and so on. But again it is those little touches: the superb mustards, the potatoes croquets, the cooked tomatoes with melted Swedish cheese that makes it that bit different.

A chef stands by the a griddle cooking growing mounds of fresh pancakes, drop scones and French toast. There are bowls galore of goodies to load onto them such as plump blueberries, cinnamon sugar, syrups and the decadence of whipped cream.

There are also Swedish cheeses and black bread some of Miss Maud's own preserves which are so bursting with berries. I had to buy some to take home. While I can't say I honestly got to all the Swedish pastries, which they also sell next door in their cake shop, they looked a tempting array.

There is a drinks station with coffee and the unheard option of milk thickened with cream for you to have with your Miss Maud's brand coffee.

The Swedes certainly know how to do dairy.

Okay so this is cholesterol overdrive. But come on its holidays and these breakfasts are an indulgent sin which you can whip out of yourself when you get home with running, cycling, swimming, self-flagellation or whatever.

I plan to start one of these activities as soon as I finish the pot of very berry jam I brought home, ostensibly for my husband.

The breakfast at Miss Maud's is complimentary if you are staying at their hotel or you can simply go in off the street and pay for their smorgasbord breakfast.

Kids and teenagers will absolutely adore these breakfasts.
