My closest girlfriends and I met at Mints for the second time recently. We are all attracted by the fresh Vietnamese salads that are perfect for Australian Summer lunches. If someone is feeling like something different, Mints is perfect as the menu is so varied. This is very common in Vietnamese restaurants in Australia - to include dishes from other Asian countries. And of course if there is a tag along kid, there is always something that they love from the menu too such as rice paper wraps, san choi bao or spring rolls. Oh and parking is good as there is a carpark.

I have only eaten here for lunch on Fridays and it's never been too busy. Most of the business seemed to come from take away clients at lunch. I have heard that it can get pretty hectic at night though. Heads up they use MSG in some dishes - it seems to be in the marinated chicken salad bowl. We sat inside in the air conditioning even though it can seem pretty loud in there with the kitchen noises and happy Friday lunching animated conversations at the other internal tables. Alas, we could not bear the heat outside on the big open terrace, so we dealt with the noise.

Overall, I do love going to this restaurant whether it is to dine in or to take-away. I was aware of some staffing issues and when I asked for extra bowls/forks, it seemed to put the waitress out. The lack of service is not a huge issue for me but if you are the kind of person who enjoys impeccable table service, I would recommend going on a weeknight, for lunch or order take-away.

I ordered the Sugarcane Prawn Salad. This is a favourite of mine when eating at Vietnamese restaurants. Mints version didn't let me down. This dish was so fresh and tasty. Not too much vermicelli to bulk the dish out and an okay amount of sugarcane prawn. Mind you I could eat twice the amount. The Vietnamese iced coffee was perfectly balanced and refreshed us all.

My mate, Maz, had the BBQ pork with wanton noodle soup. It was apparently very good. The soup had a good balance of flavour and it's not too salty or sweet. There were ample amounts of won tons and pork.

My other buddy, Al, had the marinated chicken salad bowl. As I mentioned earlier, there was suspicion of MSG and possibly why it was so damn tasty but all the elements of the dish stood out. And none of us ended up with an MSG headache - just insurmountable thirst.

One thing to mention about take away - the servings are huge. Same size you'd get for eating in. In fact, I am getting take away as a Friday night treat for the family, tonight.
