Joining an impressively long list of American Southern-inspired restaurants to hit town of late is Mighty Mighty , an early entry to the recently completed M&A laneway in Fortitude Valley.

Billing itself as a 'temple of meaty goodness,' the restaurant and bar serves up the best of southern smokehouse cuisine. Their menu features plenty of slow-cooked, melt-in-the-mouth mains like beef brisket and pulled pork, both of which I finally sampled last weekend after weeks of drooling over their menu.

Our table of four started off with jalepeno cornbread and poppers which looked as good as they tasted. The jalepeno poppers were small but packed just enough punch and were stuffed with smoked pork and Montery Jack Cheddar, while the cornbread was fresh baked and served with red pepper butter. If you have never tried cornbread, a deliciously underrated southern staple, Mighty Mighty's version is a perfect way to start.

We could have just feasted on the starters but our mains were yet to come. Between the four of us we had: the buttermilk fried chicken, juicy and incredibly crispy fried chicken pieces served with a creamy blue cheese slaw, the beef brisket, tender beef that fell apart under the slightest touch of a fork served with a crunchy (albeit slightly bland) potato salad and one very sour pickle, the pulled pork, which could never be anything but delicious, served with grits (which turned out to be kind of like mashed potato) and a tangy cider vinegar ketchup, and finally, the duck jambalaya, perfectly cooked duck served with a spiced rice, best of the bunch in my opinion (and also available in a vegetarian version for the non-meatlovers out there).
There were plenty of drink choices to go with our meals and the boys enjoyed their American craft beers while the extensive wine list pleased the girls.

We hadn't left room for dessert, which was unfortunate as there was some pretty tasty sounding pie on those menus so we made plans for a late night visit for pie in the near future.

While the restaurant setting wasn't entirely rave worthy (a little cramped, lacking in any kind of style and supremely uncomfortable seating), the food was definitely worth the visit. We had no problems with service and were visited regularly by our friendly wait staff. Prices were a little high at around $15 for a starter and $30 for a main, but I recommend sharing a couple of starters and a main between two (leaving room for dessert of course).
