Men in Black 3 - Film Review

I won't lie this is severely late considering how long ago I actually did see MiB3, and when I say severely late, I really mean it. I saw it on the 19th of June. Don't let this deter you from reading my review though, I promise I remember the movie whole heartedly. I also did manage to write and re-write a review for this two or three times in the past six weeks.

MiB3 (which is much more awesome than its predecessor, MiB2) continues on the story of Agent J (Will Smith) and Agent K (Tommy Lee Jones, boy is he gettin' old) as they continue to monitor alien activity and constantly save the world from evil extra-terrestrials. This sequel and hopefully the final film to the trilogy ( I don't know how long good ol' Tommy can keep going) bring new dimensions, plots and a very interesting journey, as well as several spectacular secrets. You will not be disappointed by this film or the stunning visual effect s and let's not forget Rick Baker's innovative make-up and creations of the alien creatures that lurk on our planet, both good and bad.

The villain that is introduced in the third film is known as 'Boris the Animal' and is played by the fantastic-super amazing-I may have a little crush, Jermaine Clement. Boris is a monstrous extra-terrestrial serial killer who escapes from a maximum security prison on the moon with the help of his girlfriend, who is unnamed and played by Nicole Scherzinger (ick!). After his escape, Boris uses time travel technology to head back in time to kill Agent K before a certain plot specific event occurs. After past K is killed, it turns out Agent J is the only person who seems to remember him.

J manages to convince new MiB boss, Agent O (Emma Thompson), that there was an Agent K and after a glass of chocolate milk he gets his hands on the same technology Boris used and sends himself back to 1969 to stop Boris. The film really starts to pick up when we get to 1969, with wonderful period detailing recreated perfectly with even the alien's looking how they would have been pictured back in the 60's (shiny suits and painted skin). Funnily enough, there are even some pretty neat jokes about racial relations in the 60's in regards to Agent J. A prime example is when J is accused of stealing a car because he is black (even though he did steal the car).

Unfortunately J does fail to get Boris when he has the chance but manages to come into contact with the younger 60's version of Agent K, the younger version being played by Josh Brolin. I have to admit, Josh does a spectacular job at playing a younger Tommy Lee Jones. MiB3 is a real testament to Brolin's acting abilities. He is tremendous with his expressions, mannerisms and voice, perfectly channelling Tommy Lee Jones. He does such a great job that you just instantly accept the fact that they are the same man, it's astounding.

Agent J of course convinces the younger K as to who he is and they pair up to stop Boris the Animal, whilst trying to track down a friendly alien named 'Griffin' who has a device that can protect the Earth from impending doom. Griffin (Michael Stuhlbarg) is tracked down at an Andy Warhol party and is a charming alien who can see all future outcomes at once. Time is running out for K by then and J realises that they have to go where the changed future said that K had died ( don't worry folks, I won't spoil anything too juicy).

There are so many things that elevate MiB3 from its predecessor and keep it much more in tone with the first film. For starters, it has a real sense of jeopardy, K being dead and all, with only J to save him. The set pieces are well executed and exciting with big shoot-ups in a Chinese restaurant, a chase on giant one wheeled bikes and an extended face-off at the end. It also gives a few jokes for the adults as well as the kiddies – look out for the screen at MIB headquarters for appearances of celebrities as aliens, such as Lady Gaga, David Beckham and Justin Beiber.

The film is brilliantly directed by Barry Sonnenfeld and Steven Spielberg weaves his magic as Executive Producer. I think that sequels really need to pull out the big guns to be a success, Men in Black specifically after the flop of MiB2 in comparison to MiB. With some astounding special effects, inspiring acting and fantastic cameos, I believe MiB3 has knocked the previous two films out of the water and if this is to be the last Men in Black film, it's definitely finishing on a very high note.

To really appreciate and understand MiB3, get yourself off that tookus and check it out and watch MiB 1 & 2 before you see it but remember, MiB2 does kinda suck in comparison to the first film but don't let it deter you from the third.
