Women with courage, but little opportunity. With encouragement and the right platform, they could thrive. Enter Global Sisters.

I first learned of Global Sisters in a magazine article and the story stayed with me. Some months later, through an unrelated art exhibition, I came across an artist whose name I recognised - it just so happened she'd been featured in the article I'd encountered earlier. As serendipity would have it, I was searching for Aboriginal necklaces made with traditional materials and again, I was lead to Cleonie, one of the "Sisters" as they're called, who was selling her beautiful pieces through Global Sisters' online shop .

Global Sisters was founded in 2013, its purpose being to help marginalised women become financially independent by providing them with access to tools, networks, resources and support in establishing and growing a business.

The organisation has a specific focus on refugees, migrants, indigenous Australians, at-risk youth, single mothers, and the long term unemployed. Assisting women to become financially independent enables them to make positive choices for themselves, their families and communities. With encouragement, these women will gain confidence, develop leadership skills and become people of influence which, in turn, will benefit other women. Pay it forward.

Through Global Sisters, women learn about business know-how, marketing and sales, micro-finance and technology. With these skills, women who have been unable to participate in mainstream employment can seize the opportunity to become self-employed, self-sustainable and stand tall.

Says Global Sisters, "Every journey is as unique as the Sister we support. Each woman will start at a different point on the business development roadmap but they'll all access the right support, at the right time, every step of the way."

From 5 - 11 October 2016, Global Sisters is sponsoring the Memories of Country exhibition in Paddington, Sydney, where 6 Sisters will be exhibiting their works representing 6 countries and 6 stories. This unique exhibition will be a celebration of their journey and memories embodied in beautiful art forms using traditional materials, showcasing the Sisters' creative talents.

As part of the Memories of Country exhibition, there'll also be workshops hosted by Sisters who are coming along to share their talents with workshop participants. Register for a workshop and learn how to create something special and support Global Sisters at the same time.

During the exhibition, there'll also be an art market where you'll find beautiful handmade items - why not start your Christmas shopping early with some unique gifts! When you buy from a Global Sister, you're giving back to women with creativity and courage and supporting not only their craft, but also their future and the futures of many other women who are positively impacted by the work of Global Sisters.

This is going to be a great event and is a perfect way to spend one or more days during the school holidays. Come along and see how sisters are doin' it for themselves!

For more information, visit the Global Sisters website .

RSVP for the workshops is essential by contacting [email protected] or calling 0411 566 545.
