Is Melbourne's Iconic Pie, the traditional Four and Twenty at the Football, or is there another iconic pie experience? What makes a good pie? Is it having golden crusty pastry that melts in the mouth? Chunks of soft steak and delicate added herbs, organic ingredients? Is it the warmth of a pie fresh from the bakers oven? Or a combination of all these that make a magical pie? Or could it be the traditional meat pie with sauce consumed from the bag with mince in gravy, lashings of tomato sauce and pastry that is strong enough to stop the meat dripping down your jumper as you manoeuvre the delicate handling of this warm morsel.

Where do you get the best pie in Melbourne and what makes it such a great pie? Australia is known for its meat pies. Melbourne has many pies, from the traditional Four and Twenty to the gourmet pies that melt in your mouth and are accompanied by delectable chutneys or gourmet sauces.

In Sydney, the have Harrys Cafe de Wheels which was named as such because it had to move 12 inches every day to conform to council regulations in its early days.* In Adelaide they have the Adelaide Pie Cart and the pie floater, which has been in existence since the 1860's.** Where in Melbourne is the pie experience you must have?

For gourmet pies in Melbourne I like the Martin St Cafe in Gardenvale and The Fitzroy St Baker, D. Chirico. On the Mornington Peninsula, you cant go past the Red HIll Bakery for sumptuous gourmet pies and wonderful strudel.

And is there a pie in Melbourne that could be considered iconic?

Sounds like everyone likes fancy pies. Pie in the Sky in Olinda for me - nice and simple and won heaps of awards for a good reason.

I vote for the pies at Studley Park Boathouse - I had a beef and burgundy one there last week. (With sauce, of course). Very tasty, hot, dribbly gravy, crisp pastry. And best of all, while I munched, I had a wonderful view over the Yarra.
