Now in its 11th year, the
Melbourne Underground Film Festival continues to embrace quirky, controversial and fearless filmmaking at its best. Dedicated to fostering an exciting new movement in Australian films, MUFF aims to showcase the work of lesser known filmmakers and hidden talents, both local and overseas.
Running from the 20th-28th August, the Melbourne Underground Film Festival program includes
MUFF Neu, a range of films directed by new Australian filmmakers, as well as
Mini MUFF, a screening of the best submitted short films. There will also be a special opening and closing night film, with bonus awards ceremony to finish off the event.
Films will be shown at three different venues this year-
Thousand Pound Bend café and gallery on Lonsdale Street, the
Classic Cinema located in Elsternwick and
Shed 4 at the Docklands. Tickets range from $10 to $20, which are usually purchased at the door, however sessions at the Classic can be booked in advance. A full list of films can be seen
online, and keep your eye out for the program which will be available in locations around the city.
Also included in this year's MUFF is the
'Bret Easton Ellis retrospective', which coincides neatly with the writer himself coming down under to Melbourne. While
Bret Easton Ellis works with words rather than images, many of his books have been adapted into classic cult films. From the disturbing world of 'American Psycho' to the empty decadence of 'Less Than Zero', it's a great way to introduce yourself to the works of one of the most darkly distinctive writers in recent literary history.
