Melbourne Town Hall Tours

Published March 25th 2010
Melbourne Town Hall is one of the city's oldest and perhaps most recognisable architectural landmarks, and with over 20 events hosted each day it is a popular choice for exhibitions, weddings and corporate functions. It has been visited by Royalty and Rock Stars alike – Prince Alfred in the late 1800s and The Beatles in the 1960s who famously waved from the marble floored Portico to screaming fans down below.

The City of Melbourne is running free tours of the Hall, so visitors can learn about the social and political significance of the Heritage Listed building that has stood tall on the corners of Collins and Swanston Streets for over 100 years.

Hear about the fire that destroyed a large part of the hall in 1925; sit in the Lord Mayor's chair and be amazed by the 70 foot ceilings of the grand Main Hall and the craftsmanship of the largest organ in the Southern Hemisphere - it has almost 10,000 pipes!

One-hour tours run twice-daily from Monday to Friday only and are appropriate for all ages. Bookings are essential so it's important to call in advance, especially if you're hoping to bring a group with you.
