The classic Doughnut has evolved a lot over the years. It used to be all about a classic jam donut or an original Krispy Kreme.

Inevitably, Melbourne decided to take the classic Doughnut and put its own crazy spin on it. Now it's hard to keep track of all the unique creations out there. Here are a few popular stores at the top of Melburnians' lists:
**
1. Shortstop Coffee and Donuts : 12 Sutherland St, Melbourne**
Shortstop recently opened a second store in Sydney - a great sign of its popularity.

It's only a small shop in a Melbourne CBD laneway, but you'll find it bustling in the mornings and especially on the popular cheat day, Friday.

In addition to the delicious doughnut flavours (they change every few weeks), there are friendly staff at hand and great coffee from Market Lane.

Personally, I love their filled doughnuts - coated on the outside but oozing with flavour; some of my favourites include apple pie, strawberries and cream and milk chocolate with chestnut cream.

Don't be the last to try these popular treats - find out more here .

2. Doughboys Doughnuts : 535 Bourke St, Melbourne
For a long time Doughboys only delivered to various stores before finally opening their own location on Bourke St earlier this year.

Inspired by American gourmet doughnuts, owner Walter Mckenzie wanted to bring this obsession to Melbourne.

The flavours are not as strong and complex as Shortstop, but there are certain flavours that I really enjoy; one being the Earl Grey with freeze dried raspberry and mandarin. If you work on the Spencer St end of the city, these doughnuts are within walking distance and they also serve my favourite Small Batch coffee.

3. Doughnut Time : various locations in Melbourne

Doughnut Time arrived from Brisbane in Melbourne towards the end of last year, and now they have four locations.

You'll find them in some interesting locations, including the first store in Topshop Emporium.

I went on opening day to get a free doughnut - the watermelon one seems very popular, but I got a chocolate one with chunks of Tim Tams on top. A bit more simple, but definitely satisfies those sugar cravings. They even released a Pokéball one to celebrate the Pokémon Go craze!

4. Cobb Lane : 13 Anderson St, Yarraville

I've heard of Cobb Lane's doughnuts on many occasions but have never been fortunate to try them. Luckily enough Flour Market , a market sourcing some of the best-baked goods in Melbourne, decided to hold some events at Melbourne Central.

I got hold of the yuzu doughnut - my work colleague joked that it look like the worst out of our selection. How wrong he was. The yuzu curd was mouthwatering, intense and citrusy. I can't wait to get my hands on them again!

5. St Gerry's : various locations in Melbourne

Another popular street snack in Melbourne is the Greek doughnut or loukoumade. They're like little balls of deliciousness, often coated in honey or chocolate.

St. Gerry's takes it one step further with flavour combinations and sauces such as tiramisu, raspberry coulis with white buttermilk chocolate and more. Look out for them at a food festival near you!

At this rate, the doughnut craze doesn't seem to be stopping anytime soon in Melbourne. Comment below with your favourite donut spots!
