Mawson House Cafe

Meadows is a small country town 45kms or so from Adelaide and about the same distance from the south coast. So it's a nice half way point if you are driving from the city to, let's say, Goolwa.
It has a population of around 750 people, several historic buildings, a bakery, antique shops, craft shops, a winery and, of course, a hotel. There's a monthly country market, and a popular country fair in October, when a famous "Udder Tug Competition" takes place. Something to do with local cows I think.
There's also a warm and welcoming café in the main street and it's well worth a visit. It's called 'Mawson House Café'.
I paid a visit recently, and asked the owner, Wendy, about the name of her café. She responded with an interesting story involving the town council, Sir Douglas Mawson and the wrought iron sign that adorns the outside wall of the building. Ask her when you visit, I'm sure she'll be happy to chat.
The café doubles as a gift shop and you'll find an array of trinkets and treasures, body lotions, candles and lovely books.
There's an adjacent outdoor courtyard but inside seemed warm and inviting to me.
The mosaic table tops add a bit of fuss to the decor.
As well as an adjacent courtyard, the café has an adjacent yoga space. Wendy explained the two different types of Yoga classes that are held there on Wednesdays and Saturdays and also the Meditation Sessions held on Tuesday evenings.
I love a new place with plenty going on, so, having gained a sense of the Mawson House Café story, it was time to turn my mind to the important issue of food.
The menu lists five different starters priced from $5. The house-made battered onion rings served with Beerenberg tomato chutney tempted me. As did the warm roasted vegetable salad with minted yoghurt dressing, a main course priced at $13.50. Then the specials board caught my eye; lemon peppered squid with a garden salad for $17. Hmmm, I felt a decision coming on.
I took one look at the selection of cakes and my mind was made up. I ordered pumpkin soup.
The soup was deliciously thick with a hint of spice and left me with just enough appetite for cake. You see all the cakes at Mawson House Café (and there are so many to choose from) are made right there by talented chef, Steve. I was faced with another difficult decision but eventually chose a pear tart with chantilly cream and a toffee mantilla.
I felt fortunate to be lunching with a friend who ordered a baked cheesecake with passionfruit sauce and allowed me a taste.
After coffee we felt pleasantly nourished and ready for a walk. So we set off on Steve Hudson's
Meadows Heritage Walk to learn more about Meadows. And Sir Douglas Mawson.
