Maudie... Put the Record On - Book Review

Rene Andronicos, born on Bastille Day - 14 July 1919, tells her story in this sad, yet inspiring book.

Her dad, Theo Andronicos, left his hometown of Potamos, on the island of Kythera, Greece to make the long voyage to an unknown land. He set sail on Orient Line steamship, the "Oruba", arriving at Circular Quay , Sydney in July 1897. He was sixteen years old when he reached Australia. Theo had a passion for music and as a young single man, played the violin at Greek community dances, accompanied by a bouzouki and mandolin player. Theo and Maude married in Brisbane on the 3rd of March 1914.

"Maudie...Put the Record On" was chosen because of Rene's treasured memories of her parents arriving home each night , after work from their cafe and dad asking mum – Maude, to put the record on. Rene as a young child used to dance to the music.

"Maudie...Put the Record On" is a true story about the early part of Rene's life growing up in the Brisbane suburb of Red Hill between the years 1923 and 1938. It tells about the hardships her family experienced and how they coped especially with their mother's illness during The Great Depression.

Finally, the story of the only daughter of a Greek migrant from the island of Kythera was published in 2013 at the age of 94. During times of pain, sadness and financial difficulty the Andronicos family persevered with hope and faith. Their love for each other never questioned; this family triumphed trials and tribulations. Rene Andronicos celebrates this in her book.

Rene will be the special guest at St Brigid's Church centenary celebrations on the 27 July 2014. The Andronicos family were parishioners of St Brigid's Parish and Rene was a student at the convent primary school.
