You will be moved and enchanted by this highly acclaimed cabaret, based on Matthew's tell-all autobiography, as he candidly recounts the highs and lows of his career, overcoming drug-addiction, climbing to gold-medal fame in Beijing, coming out as gay and many other twists and turns in the life of a true champion. It is a story of recovery and gratitude, with tales of his mother, his discovery of trampolining, his move into diving, his discovery of Brisbane's gay club scene and his determination to balance his wild-child partying with the discipline of training for an Olympic sport.
Through theatre and song and with his beloved ukulele, Matthew shares the twists and turns of his amazing life. Most incredible of all, you will hear how Matthew reached international prominence while plagued by mental illness, drug abuse and struggles relating to his sexuality.
Get set for a crazy ride as Matthew takes you through the poignant, playful and phenomenal moments that have made up his life. Accompanied on stage by his ukulele and trampoline and with a special appearance of cabaret icon, Spanky, you will discover the secrets of life as an elite, gay athlete while you enjoy songs made famous by Alanis Morrisette, the Spice Girls and Nick Cave.
The show has been commissioned and produced by the Melbourne Cabaret Festival and directed by Nigel Turner-Carroll. It has been scripted by multi-award winning UK cabaret performer Spanky under the musical direction of Jeremy Brennan (
Jersey Boys).
Twists and Turns had its world premiere in February 2014 at the Perth Fringe Festival, where it won the Best Cabaret award.
